Cloud Migration Without the Downtime Panic

Moving a business off old hosting or onto cloud infrastructure gets postponed for years because it sounds disruptive — and then it often is disruptive, but usually for avoidable reasons.

The actual technical steps are well understood: inventory everything currently running, including the parts nobody documented; provision the new environment; migrate data with a tested rollback plan; and cut over during a low-traffic window. None of that is where migrations usually go wrong.

What causes real downtime is incomplete discovery — an email service tied to the old server’s IP address, a scheduled job nobody remembered existed, a third-party integration that whitelisted a specific server. These aren’t hard problems once identified; the damage comes from discovering them after the cutover, not before.

Treat a migration as an inventory exercise first and a technical move second, and the move itself stops being the risky part.
